Email alerts are not sent from VMware vRealize Log Insight (2056981)

Symptoms

    • Email notifications are not delivered by vRealize Log Insight (formerly known as VMware vCenter Log Insight).
    • You see errors similar to:

Failed to send e-mail to someuser@vmware.com. Reason: Sending the email to the following server failed : localhost:25; Exception reading response; Read timed out.

    • vRealize Log Insight is configured to use the built-in sendmail daemon for delivering email notifications.

    Cause

This issue occurs if the vRealize Log Insight (formerly known as VMware vCenter Log Insight) virtual machine cannot resolve its own hostname. Usually, this occurs due to an incorrect DNS server specification.

    Resolution

To resolve this issue, determine if the vRealize Log Insight (formerly known as VMware vCenter Log Insight) system is unable to resolve its own hostname and correct the DNS server specification, if required.

To determine if the vRealize Log Insight system is unable to resolve its own hostname and to correct the DNS server specification:

    1. Log in to the vRealize Log Insight system as root.
    2. Run one of these commands:
      • If there are DNS servers present in the environment:

        nslookup hostname

      • If there are no DNS servers present in the environment:

        ping hostname

    3. If the hostname is not resolvable, check if the DNS server entry must be updated.

To update the DNS server entry:
      1. Shut down the vRealize Log Insight virtual machine.
      2. Right-click the virtual machine and click Edit Settings.
      3. Click the Options tab.
      4. Click Properties under vApp Options.
      5. Update the list of DNS servers in the DNS field.
      6. Click OK.
      7. Power on the vRealize Log Insight virtual machine.

Note: Ensure that a valid DNS entry for the vRealize Log Insight virtual machine has been created.

    4. If there are no DNS servers present:
    1. Log in to the vRealize Log Insight virtual machine as root.
    2. Open the /etc/hosts file using a text editor.
    3. Add an entry similar to:

      ip_address FQDN hostname

      For example:

      192.168.2.20  loginsight.vmware.com loginsight

    4. Save and close the file.
    5. Restart the sendmail daemon using this command:
    service sendmail restart
