Installing Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0 Update 2 as a Guest Operating System

Details

How do I install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0 Update 2 as a guest operating system?

Solution

In order to install Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0 Update 2 as a guest operating system with VMware ESX Server 2.5.2, you need two things:

  • A BusLogic SCSI driver disk compatible with the kernel version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0 Update 2 that you intend to use. VMware provides a BusLogic driver disk compatible with kernel version 2.6.9-22.EL, available for download at www.vmware.com/download/esx/esx2-rhel4-update.html.

Currently, VMware does not provide a driver disk for kernel version 2.6.9-22.0.2.EL, which is the kernel version for the kernel security update described in RHSA-2006:0101-9 at rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2006-0101.html. VMware expects to make a driver disk for this kernel version available at a future date.

  • A version of VMware Tools that supports Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0 Update 2. You can download an ISO image of this VMware Tools version at www.vmware.com/download/esx/esx2-rhel4-update.html.
