Unable to log in to a virtual machine created from VMware Catalog within VMware vCloud Hybrid Service (2051758)

Symptoms

  • After creating a virtual machine from the VMware Catalog selection you are unable to log in to the virtual machine console
  • Logging into the virtual machine console fails after creating a virtual machine from the VMware Catalog selection

Cause

Currently, you cannot specify the password for a newly created virtual machine through the vCloud Hybrid Service user interface.

Resolution

To resolve this issue:
  1. Log in to the VMware vCloud Hybrid Service portal.
  2. Click the Virtual Machines tab.
  3. Locate the name of the virtual machine with the log in issue.

    Note: To the right of the Name field on the blue field description bar, you can use the dropdown to sort the virtual machine name.

  4. Click the row with virtual machine name.
  5. Click Power Off, then click OK.
  6. Click the name of the virutal machine.
  7. On the right hand side under IN VCLOUD DIRECTOR, click Manage Advanced Virtual Machine Settings. You are logged in to the vCloud Director interface.
  8. Click the Virtual Machines tab.
  9. Right-click the name of the virtual machine.
  10. Click Properties.
  11. Click the Guest OS Customization tab.
  12. Click Allow local administrator password , then click Specify password.
  13. Enter a password. 

    Note: For information on the minimum password complexities requirements for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2, see the Microsoft TechNet article, Passwords must meet complexity requirements.

  14. Click OK.
  15. Right-click the name of the virtual machine and click Power On and Force Recustomization.

Impact/Risks

VMware vCloud Hybrid Service uses sysprep for guest operating system customizations and Windows activation. However, in the Microsoft TechNet article, What is Sysprep?, Microsoft indicates that you cannot reset Windows activation more than three times.
