Cannot Power On after Adding a Virtual Disk as Root

Details

I logged in as root and added a new virtual hard drive to my virtual machine. Now I cannot start the virtual machine. What is wrong?

Solution

The user who created the virtual machine must make all changes to that virtual machine's configuration.

If the virtual machine was created by a specific user, you need to log in as that user in order to make any changes to the virtual machine.

As root, use chown on the .vmdk file to change the ownership back to the user that created the virtual machine.
