VMware Tools upgrade/uninstallation in RHEL 6.x and CentOS 6.x aborts with an error (2045537)

Details

If you have upgraded from ESX/ESXi 4.0 Patch ESX400-201209001/ESXi400-201209001 to a higher release without upgrading to ESX/ESXi 4.0 Patch ESX400-201302001/ESXi400-201302001 first, then uninstallation of the old VMware Tools aborts with the following error:

Unable to find the answer INITRDMODS_CONF_VALS in the installer > database (/etc/vmware-tools/locations). You may want to re-install VMware Tools.

If you attempt to do an interactive upgrade of VMware Tools using the tar installer, the installer will first attempt to uninstall the existing Tools resulting in the above error. However you can still trigger the Tools installation using the vmware-install.pl, which will install the new VMware Tools successfully.

Solution

Workaround: Apply ESX/ESXi 4.0 Patch ESX400-201302001/ESXi400-201302001 (See KB 2041343) before upgrading from ESX/ESXi 4.0 Patch ESX400-201209001/ESXi400-201209001.
