Attempting to start a vApp in vCloud Director fails with the error: Failed to initialize the shield appliance. (2045280)

Symptoms

  • Cannot start a vApp in the vCloud Director (vCD) environment
  • Attempting to start a vApp fails
  • You see the error:

    Cannot start.

  • This error includes the following details:
    • Unable to start vApp "name"
    • Failed to initialize Shield appliance
    • Connection to vShield Manager failed. Either vShield Manager is not reachable, or REST server is not running on it, or it took too long to respond.

Cause

This issue occurs when the vShield Manager Web services have failed or are locked in some way.

Resolution

To resolve this issue: 
  1. Open a console to the vShield Manager server.
  2. Press any key to launch the login prompt.
  3. Log in to vShield Manager.
  4. At the prompt, enter enable.
  5. Press Enter. 
  6. Type the admin password.
  7. Press Enter. 
  8. At the manager# prompt, enter no web-manager.
  9. Press Enter to stop the Web manager service. 
  10. After the Web manager service stops, enter web-manager and press Enter to start the Web manager service.
  11. Redeploy your vAPP.
