Installation or restart of  Ubuntu 10.04.2 or Ubuntu 10.04.3 32-bit operating system might fail when ESX 4.1 runs on servers with Dual-Core AMD Opteron Processor 8214 or Dual-Core AMD Opteron Processor 2214 HE.

Solution

Workaround:
  1. While creating a new virtual machine in the VI client, enable VMI paravirtualization option in the New Virtual Machine - Virtual Machine Properties window. Go to VM Settings > Options > Paravirtualization and select Enable VMI paravirtualization.
  2. Install the operating system.

This issue is resolved in ESX 4.1 Update 2.
