After upgrading ESXi to 4.1 Update 3, Trend Micro thin-agent drivers report as Offline (2044676)

Symptoms

  • When running Trend Micro Deep Security, upgrading to ESXi 4.1 Update 3 from any prior build of ESXi causes Deep Security protected virtual machines to experience communication issues between the thin-agent in the virtual machine, the dvfilter-dsa driver, and Deep Security Manager.

  • The issue occurs specifically when a virtual machine is suspended and resumed on the upgraded hosts, or a migration using vMotion to the upgraded host is performed.

  • Connectivity can be temporarily restored with a cold boot (power off and power on the affected virtual machine), but the issue reoccurs if the virtual machine is suspended and resumed, or a migration using vMotion is performed.

  • You see these error messages in /var/log/messages:

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting ESXi 4.1 Update 3. VMware Engineering is aware of the issue and is working on a solution.
