Upgrading VMware vCenter Server 5.0.x fails with the error: Window Installer Coordinator Error (2044660)

Symptoms

  • You are unable to upgrade VMware vCenter Server on Windows 2008R2.
  • You may see the following error:

    Windows Installer Coordinator

  • The vminst.log (located in the %temp% directory) contains entries similar to:

Cause

This issue is caused by an incompatibility with the Embedded MSI technology and the Windows Installer Coordinator.

Resolution

To workaround this issue,  disable the Remote Desktop Session Host Windows Installer for the duration of the upgrade.

To disable this group policy:
  1. Log on to the system with a User that has Administrative Privileges.
  2. Click Start > Run..
  3. Type gpedit.msc.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Navigate to Local Computer PolicyComputer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Application Compatibility.
  6. In the right pane, right-click Turn off Windows Installer RDS Compatibility.
  7. From the dropdown menu, select Edit.
  8. Select Enable.
  9. Click OK.
You can now enable the Remote Desktop Session Host Windows Installer.
