VMware Tools installer dialog and VMware Tools service description displayed as garbage text on Japanese locale (2043960)

Symptoms

  • Japanese characters in the VMware Tools installer dialog and VMware Tools service description display as garbled or garbage text.
  • Non-ASCII characters displayed in the VMware Tools installer dialog and VMware Tools service description do not display correctly.
  • Text in the VMware Tools installer dialog and VMware Tools service description is unreadable.
  • The VMware Tools installer and VMware Tools service description display issue occurs on Windows guest operating systems.
  • This issue is reported to affect Chinese and Korean locales.
  • The VMware Tools Progress dialog for preparing installation shows garbled captions and messages.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting ESXi 5.0 Update 2.

Note: The garbled text issue can be safely ignored and does not affect the behavior of VMware Tools.
