Cannot perform any operation on the virtual machines listed in Workstation when logged in as a user with permissions set through the vSphere Client (2043326)

Symptoms

When connecting to an ESX/ESXi host or vCenter Server using the Connect to Server option as a user with permissions set through the vSphere Client, you experience these symptoms:
  • You are unable to perform any operation on the virtual machines listed in Workstation
  • You see the error:

Permission to perform this operation was denied

Cause

This issue occurs because the user account does not have sufficient permissions (required by the Workstation user interface) on the host objects.

Resolution

This is a known issue in VMware Workstation 8.x/9.x and is currently under investigation.

To work around this issue, add the user account configured in vSphere to the host machine running Workstation. This ensures that the user has sufficient permissions to perform operations on the host objects.
