Unable to load tc Server through vFabric Hyperic 5.0 Server UI (2043176)

Symptoms

  • You see this error in the Hyperic 5.0 Server UI while attempting to load a tc Server configuration (Resources > Browse > Servers > tc Runtime instance > Views > Server Configuration) as per the documentation:

    Error Loading Server Configuration
Agent exception occurred on thunderball tc Runtime test-2: Unable to read existing tc Runtime configuration. Cause: Unable to read existing tc Runtime configuration. Cause: Unbalanced string : Value starts with " but doesn't end with one.

  • The Hyperic 5.0 Server bootstrap.log contains a message similar to:

19-12-2012 21:45:51,064 EST WARN [tomcat-http--19] [org.hyperic.hq.livedata.agent.client.LiveDataCommandsClientImpl@70] Unable to deserialize agent data. You may need to update your agent

  • The Agent's agent.log contains a message similar to:

    19-12-2012 21:45:50,026 EST INFO [AsyncInvoker-1] [UnixFileReadingEnvironmentFactory@108] Reading key/value pair CATALINA_OUT/"$CATALINA_BASE/logs/server.log"
    19-12-2012 21:45:50,027 EST INFO [AsyncInvoker-1] [UnixFileReadingEnvironmentFactory@193] About to unwrap last symbol '"-Xms1024m -Xmx4096m -XX:PermSize'
    19-12-2012 21:45:50,027 EST ERROR [AsyncInvoker-1] [UnixFileReadingEnvironmentFactory@57] Received
Unbalanced string: Value starts with " but doesn't end with one.

Cause

Accessing the tc Server Configuration through the Hyperic 5.0 Server UI shows an exception parsing setenv.sh.

Specifically, the tc Server instance's setenv.sh file is not parsed correctly when multiple equal signs (=) occur in a line or when a line that is commented out contains an equal sign (=).

As a result, you cannot monitor tc Server using the tc Server plugin that is shipped with vFabric Hyperic 5.0.

Resolution

This is a known issue. Currently, there is no workaround.
