The vFabric Hyperic installer does not support direct upgrade from vFabric Hyperic 4.x to vFabric Hyperic 5.x (2040713)
Symptoms
- Upgrading from an existing 4.x Hyperic Server directly to Hyperic 5.x fails
- You receive a database error when upgrading from an existing 4.x Hyperic Server directly to Hyperic 5.x.
- If you try to upgrade an existing Hyperic instance that is using an Oracle database repository you may see the error:

Purpose
This article explains why an error occurs and provides references to documentation of the correct process to follow when upgrading from vFabric Hyperic 4.x versions to the vFabric Hyperic 5.x version of the product.
Cause
The Hyperic installer does not support direct upgrade from 4.x to 5.x. A separate migration process is required.
It is possible to choose the upgrade option when running the Hyperic 5.0 installer. However this option is only valid for an upgrade from a version of Hyperic 5.x to a newer version of Hyperic 5.x.
If you choose the upgrade option and the current version of Hyperic is not Hyperic 5.0 and is an earlier 4.x version, the installation fails.
With version 5.0, the only supported Hyperic database repository is PostgreSQL. The upgrade procedure is different that with previous versions.
Resolution
To upgrade a 4.x Hyperic Server to 5.0, see Migrate v4 Hyperic Server and Database to v5 in Getting Started with vFabric Hyperic. If you have an existing Hyperic Server installation, the server configuration and the contents of the existing Hyperic database are preserved.
Before performing an upgrade installation, see Hyperic Upgrade Processes in Getting Started with vFabric Hyperic.
Impact/Risks
When choosing the upgrade option of the installer with an invalid current version of the product the installer will fail to complete.
If you cancel the installation and follow the proper procedures, no damage will occur as a result of the failed installation.
VMware recommends performing a complete backup of the database prior to upgrade or migration.
Additional Information
For information about moving to PostgreSQL as the Hyperic database repository, see Why Hyperic is Going to Support PostgreSQL Only As a Backend Database.
