Error Message Committing Changes to an Undoable Disk

Details

I get an error message when I try to commit changes to an undoable disk. How can I get the changes to commit?

Solution

If you see an error message during the commit process, you can rerun the commit in either of two ways.

  • Start the virtual machine again, and when you see the dialog offering options for the undoable disk, click Commit.
  • Use the command-line vmkfstools --commitfile option, as described in the section of the manual titled File System Management on SCSI Disks and RAID.

Notes:

  • If the REDO log file is larger than 600MB, this process works only on ESX Server 1.5 and higher.
  • Sometimes when a REDO log cannot be committed, the system may have prompted you with a question that is still pending. The system may not have found a console to write the question to, for example. If this is the case, the error log reports a message similar to this:
    Jan 18 23:39:57: vmx| Msg_Question:
    Jan 18 23:39:57: vmx| Question without a remote UI:
Run vmware-cmd answer, then recommit the file.
