VMware Tools related values are displayed under incorrect headings in Windows Performance Monitor on a virtual machine (2039248)

Symptoms

In the Windows Performance Monitor (perfmon.exe) in a virtual machine:
  • When you right-click on the performance graph and click Add Counters, then expand the Win32_PerfRawData_vmGuestLib_VCPU and Win32_PerfRawData_vmGuestLib_VMEM headings, they both show VMware Tools related values (for example, CpuLimitMHz and MemActiveMB).
Note: These values normally appear under the VM Processor and VM Memory headings.

Resolution

This is a known issue affecting ESXi 4.1 and 5.x.

To work around this issue:
  1. Change the system locale on your virtual machine to a locale which is not the default for that system. For more information, see the Microsoft article, Change the system locale.

Note: Make note of the original system locale for use later in this procedure.

  2. Reboot your virtual machine for the change to take effect.
  3. Uninstall and reinstall VMware Tools. For more information, see the Resolution section of VMware Tools may not install on a Windows guest operating system after upgrading to a newer version of ESXi/ESX (1012693).
  4. Change the system locale back to what it was configured to by default. For more information, see the Microsoft article, Change the system locale.
  5. Reboot your virtual machine for the change to take effect.

VMware Tools related values now appear under the VM Processor and VM Memory headings.
