View Administrator Console fails to launch after an upgrade to Horizon View 5.1 and installation of new SSL certificates (2038842)


  • After upgrading to View 5.1, the View Administrator console page fails to launch.
  • The View Connection Server logs show entries similar to:

    • ERROR (10E8-15C4) <Thread-1> [u] Couldn't create SSL socket factory java.lang.NullPointerException: invalid null input

    • FATAL (10E8-15C4) <Thread-1> [Ice] ICE start
      java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: socketFactory must be supplied

    • FATAL (10E8-15C4) <Thread-1> [Ice] ICE start java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: socketFactory must be supplied

    • FATAL (10E8-15C4) <Thread-1> [JMXServer] Could not start the Ice Server java.lang.Exception: ICE Start: socketFactory must be supplied at com.sun.jmx.mbeanserver.MBeanIntrospector.unwrapInvocationTargetException(
    • WARN (10E8-1548) <Ice Shutdown> [Ice] Problem stopping NetHandler: java.lang.Exception: Can't stop message loop: not running! java.lang.Exception: Can't stop message loop: not running!

    • WARN (1758-17B8) <ws_tomcatservice_init> [ValidatingFilter] Cannot parse maxLength, using default
    • INFO (1758-17B8) <ws_tomcatservice_init> [CertificateAuthFilter] Smart Card Authentication mode: OPTIONAL
    • INFO (10E8-0B54) <javabridge> [ws_java_bridgeDLL] The View Security Server subsystem has stopped
Note: For more information on the location of the View log files, see Location of VMware View log files (1027744).


This issue occurs if a file from a previous version of View still resides in the conf folder located at C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware View\Server\sslgateway\ on the Connection Server. This causes the Security Server to fail to read the new SSL certificate.


To resolve this issue:

The View Administrator console page now launches successfully.

Note: These messages can also appear if the SSL certificate is not exportable. For more information, see After importing an internal Active Directory signed SSL certificate into the View Connection Server, the View Administrator portal fails to load (2043736).
