Backup job fails for all virtual machines after vSphere Data Protection 5.1 deployment (2038597)

Symptoms

  • Backup job fails for all virtual machines at the vSphere Data Protection (VDP) backup task with an error similar to:

    error: VDP: Backup job (Test) failed to backup client VM-Test. Execution error: E10007:Miscellaneous error.. Job ID: Test-1349720501164, (Full client path: )

  • In the vmimagew.log file for the affected job, you see messages similar to:

    • XXXX-XX-XX 14:12:17 avvcbimage Info <9706>: Adding file 'vm.ovf' (55 bytes)
      XXXX-XX-XX 14:12:17 avvcbimage Info <9706>: Adding file 'vm.vmx' (0 bytes)
      XXXX-XX-XX 14:12:17 avvcbimage Error <12016>: vmx file is suspiciously small (under 30 bytes), please examine the log on the Avamar Administrator for root cause analysis
      XXXX-XX-XX 14:12:17 avvcbimage Info <0000>: Starting graceful (staged) termination, The VMX file in the workorder was too small. (wrap-up stage)
      XXXX-XX-XX 14:12:17 avvcbimage Error <9760>: Backup of VM metadata failed.
      XXXX-XX-XX 14:12:17 avvcbimage Info <9672>: Disconnected from VM

    • XXXX-XX-XX 14:22:40 avvcbimage Error <12016>: vmx file is suspiciously small (under 30 bytes), please examine the log on the Avamar Administrator for root cause analysis
      XXXX-XX-XX 14:22:40 avvcbimage Error <9760>: Backup of VM metadata failed.
      XXXX-XX-XX 14:22:44 avvcbimage Error <9768>: Avtar exited with 'code 158: cannot establish connection with server (possible network or DNS failure)'

      Note: The log file example is /usr/local/avamarclient/var-proxy*/Test-1349720501164*vmimagew.log.

Cause

This issue occurs when the name of the datacenter or virtual machine contains special characters. These special characters may include:
  • ampersand (&)
  • forward slash (/)
  • back slash (\)
  • equal sign (=)
  • characters such as "[" or "]'

Resolution

To resolve this issue, apply a name to the datacenter that does not contain special characters.

For example, special characters may be replaced with an underscore (_) or a hyphen (-).

For example, MyFolder&101 becomes MyFolder_101.
