Cannot configure a virtual machine replication if the target destination is a datastore cluster (2036181)

Symptoms

When attempting to configure a virtual machine replication, you experience these symptoms if you select a datastore cluster as the destination in the Target location page of the Replication wizard:

  • If SDRS is enabled in the Storage Cluster, you see the error:

    An internal error has occurred - Error #1009
    Reloading the client is recommended, so as to clear any problems left by this error.

    Click Yes to reload the vSphere Web Client

  • If SDRS is not enabled in the Storage Cluster, you see that the system hangs displaying validating message

Cause

This issue occurrs because vSphere Replication does not support Datastore Clusters as the target destination on the vSphere Replication Management Server (VRMS).

Resolution

This is a known issue.
 
To work around this issue, select a datastore that is not a part of a Storage DRS cluster or to move the datastore off the Storage DRS cluster before configuring the replication for the virtual machine(s).
