LSI SAS HBA is unable to see the LUNs after upgrading to ESXi 5.x (2034740)

Symptoms

  • After upgrading to ESXi 5.x, LSI SAS adapters fail to discover LUNs on directly connected Serial Attached Storage (SAS)
  • One HBA may see the LUN, but logs show many entries similar to:

    write errors / Latency

  • mpt2sas is upgraded to the latest version 06.00.00.00-6vmw
  • Boot logs show that the drivers are properly loaded and drivers are not reporting any errors

Cause

This issue occurs when Virtual Technology for Direct I/O (VT-d) is enabled on host processors.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, disable VT-d from the host BIOS. For more information see, vHBAs and other PCI devices may stop responding in ESX/ESXi 4.1/ESXi 5.0 when using Interrupt Remapping (1030265).

Note: Disabling VT-d also disables some of the other features that it provides, such as DMA remapping and Interrupt remapping.
