Upgrading from Workstation 8 to Workstation 9 (2034040)

Purpose

This article provides step by step instructions to upgrade from VMware Workstation 8 to VMware Workstation 9.

Resolution



To upgrade from VMware Workstation 8 to VMware Workstation 9, you can use one of these options:

  • When you start VMware Workstation, you may be prompted for an available upgrade. Click Upgrade Now to perform the upgrade.

  • From within Workstation, click Help > Software Updates.

  • Download the full installer from the VMware Web site, and run the installer to perform the installation. For more information, see Installing Workstation in the VMware Workstation 9 Documentation Center.

    Note: VMware Workstation 9 can be downloaded on the VMware Workstation download page.

After the upgrade to VMware Workstation 9 is complete:

  1. Upgrade the virtual hardware version:

    1. Click Upgrade Hardware version in the VM Summary page.
    2. Follow the steps in the Wizard and then click Finish when the process is complete.

  2. After upgrading the hardware version, power on the virtual machine and update VMware Tools:

    1. Click VM > Update VMware Tools. The VMware Tools installation Wizard starts in the virtual machine.
    2. Follow the steps in the Wizard and then click Finish when the process is complete.
    3. Restart the virtual machine.
