vCenter Single Sign On fails at start up or during initialization (2033164)

Details

There can be several possible reasons that vCenter Single Sign On fails at start up or during initialization. These include the following.

  • Single Sign On started earlier than the database.
  • The database is not accessible.
  • The database log in password is expired.

Solution

The solution depends on the underlying cause.

If your database server is on the same machine as Single Sign On, in some cases restarting your machine might cause Single Sign On to start before the database server is initialized. Manually restart Single Sign On.

If you are usingĀ  an external database server, it is possible that the database is not accessible. The database server must be accessible using the IP address or FQDN that was used when you installed Single Sign On.
  • Verify that the IP address or FQDN is correct in
    SingleSignOn_Server\webapps\lookupservice\WEB-INF\classes\config.properties
  • Make any necessary corrections to the IP address or FQDN.
If you are using an external database server, the database server login password might have expired or been changed and not updated in Single Sign On. Database log in accounts do not expire using the embedded Microsoft SQL Server Express Database. To see the database that Single Sign On is configured to use, perform the following steps.
  • At a command line, type SingleSignOn_server\utils\ssocli manage-secrets -a listallkeys
  • When prompted, supply the master password.
  • Update the configuration using the command ssocli configure-riat -a configure-db

For details about these commands, see the command-line help.
