I have VMware Workstation 7.x or 8.x. Am I eligible to purchase an upgrade to VMware Workstation 9?

Yes. If you have registered your license key with VMware, you can purchase an upgrade license from the Online Store.

I have VMware Workstation 1.x – 6.x. Can I purchase VMware 9.x at an upgrade discount?

There is no upgrade option for VMware Workstation 1.x – 6.x. You can purchase a full license from the Online Store.

Where can I download VMware Workstation 9.x?

You can download VMware Workstation from the VMware Download Center. For more information, see Accessing VMware downloads (2006993).

Can I use the same license key for installing VMware Workstation on multiple computers?

The End User License Agreement (EULA) linked to the VMware Workstation does not allow you to install another Workstation with the same license key. You require a separate Workstation license for each installation.

Where is the license key that I just purchased?
 
You can view license keys in My VMware. For more information, see Viewing license keys in My VMware (2006831).
 
The license key is also sent via an email after your purchase. Look for your Order Confirmation email. You may need to check your junk/spam folder.
 
Note: If your license key is not available in your order confirmation email, your order might still be processing. Wait for the follow-up email to confirm your license key. This email is usually sent within 24 hours from the time of purchase. The follow-up email contains a link to access your license key.
 
Where and how do I license my VMware Workstation 9 product that I just purchased?
 
To license your VMware Workstation 9 software or to change your license type from evaluation to purchased:
  1. Open Workstation.
  2. Go to the Help menu and select Enter Serial Number.
  3. Select Enter Serial Number.

How do I register my new VMware Workstation 9 license key?

If you placed your order online, allow 24 hours before registering your product to ensure that your order has processed completely. For information on registering your license key, see Registering a license key in My VMware (2011177).

 
Can I downgrade my license key?

Yes, VMware Workstation 9 can be downgraded to Workstation 8. For information on downgrading licenses, see Downgrading license keys in My VMware (2006975).

Technology Guarantee Program (TGP)

What is the Technology Guarantee Program?

VMware provides a free copy of VMware Workstation 9 if you purchased a copy of Workstation 8 from vmware.com or select Resellers between August 1st, 2012 and September 30th, 2012.
 
How can I obtain my VMware Workstation 9 license key, if I am within the eligibility period?
  • If you have purchased VMware Workstation 8 electronically from VMware or a VMware reseller during this time period, you automatically receive a new VMware Workstation 9 license key(s) via email by September 30th, 2012 . No further action is required to receive your upgrade.
  • If you have purchased a VMware Workstation 8 retail box through a VMware Reseller during this time period, you need to submit your license key(s) and proof of purchase online by October 31, 2012. Allow up to 30 days to receive your complimentary electronic upgrade to VMware Workstation 9.

I have a subscription for my license of VMware Workstation. How do I get my free upgrade?

Customers with an active support and subscription (SnS) contract are eligible to upgrade to Workstation 9 for free. For more information, see Upgrading license keys in My VMware (2006974).

Upgrades are available on the portal shortly after VMware Workstation 9 becomes generally available. All license keys with active support and subscription contracts with an end date on or after General Availability are eligible for an upgrade.
 
After receiving your new license keys, you can download VMware Workstation 9 software from the Workstation Download page.

Refunds

I purchased VMware Workstation 8 before the cut off date for the Technology Guarantee Program (August 1st, 2012). Can I get a refund?

There are no refunds for VMware Workstation purchases.

I do not have a supported operating system. Can I get a refund?
