Joining an ESXi host to a domain and specifying an authentication proxy IP fails with the error: The specified vSphere Authentication proxy server is not reachable, or has denied access to the service (2031477)

Symptoms

You experience these symptoms in vCenter Server 5.0.x:
  • Cannot join an ESXi host to a domain
  • Joining an ESXi host to a domain fails
  • When you navigate to Configuration > Authentication Services > Properties > Join Domain, select the Use vSphere Authentication Proxy option, and enter the proxy server IP address, you see the error:

The specified vSphere Authentication proxy server is not reachable, or has denied access to the service.

  • In the camadapter.log file, you see entries similar to:

    Initialize Monitor
Exceptions in cam adapter service: Invalid argument : 'C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\VMware' is not a directory
    Reconnecting VC ...
    Initialize Monitor
Exceptions in cam adapter service: Invalid argument : 'C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\VMware' is not a directory

Note: By default, the camadapter.log file is located at:

    C:\ProgramData\VMware\vSphere Authentication Proxy\logs

Cause

This issue occurs because the Computer Account Management (CAM) service fails to parse the invalid host profiles in the vCenter Server inventory. This occurs when there are legacy ESXi/ESX 4.x host profiles in the vCenter Server inventory.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, delete the legacy host profiles.

To delete the ESXi/ESX 4.x host profiles:
  1. Connect to vCenter Server using the vSphere Client.
  2. Navigate to Home > Management > Host Profiles.
  3. For each ESXi/ESX 4.x host profile, click Delete host profile.
