Joining an ESXi host to a domain and specifying an authentication proxy IP fails with the error: The specified vSphere Authentication proxy server is not reachable, or has denied access to the service (2031477)
Symptoms
- Cannot join an ESXi host to a domain
- Joining an ESXi host to a domain fails
- When you navigate to Configuration > Authentication Services > Properties > Join Domain, select the Use vSphere Authentication Proxy option, and enter the proxy server IP address, you see the error:
The specified vSphere Authentication proxy server is not reachable, or has denied access to the service. - In the
camadapter.logfile, you see entries similar to:Initialize Monitor
Exceptions in cam adapter service: Invalid argument : 'C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\VMware' is not a directory

Note: By default, thecamadapter.logfile is located at:C:\ProgramData\VMware\vSphere Authentication Proxy\logs
Cause
Resolution
To delete the ESXi/ESX 4.x host profiles:
- Connect to vCenter Server using the vSphere Client.
- Navigate to Home > Management > Host Profiles.
- For each ESXi/ESX 4.x host profile, click Delete host profile.
