ESX Server 3.0.1, Patch ESX-2031037: CIM and Durable LUN Names

This patch provides a fix to enable the creation of reliable and durable LUN names for storage arrays in order to properly enable storage management tools that operate using the Common Information Model (CIM).

Applicability
This patch is for ESX Server 3.0.1 only.
Installing the Patch
Download Instructions
Download and verify the patch bundle as follows:

Download patch ESX-2031037 from http://www.vmware.com/download/vi/vi3_patches.html.

Log into the ESX Server service console as root.
- Create a local depot directory.
# mkdir /var/updates
Note: VMware recommends that you use the updates directory.
- Change your working directory to /var/updates.
# cd /var/updates

Download the tar file into the /var/updates directory.
- Verify the integrity of the downloaded tar file.
# md5sum ESX-2031037.tgz
The md5 checksum output should match the following:
2df5b252b82f5a33be64513fad8daef7 ESX-2031037.tgz
- Extract the compressed tar archive.
# tar -xvzf ESX-2031037.tgz
- Change to the newly created directory, /var/updates/ESX-2031037.
# cd ESX-2031037
Installation Instructions
After you have downloaded and extracted the archive, install the update as follows:
- Stop the pegasus service by entering the following command:
# service pegasus stop
- If you are in the directory you created above, install the update using the following command:
# esxupdate –n update
- Restart the pegasus service by using the following command:
# service pegasus start
If you want to run esxupdate from a different directory, you must specify the bundle path in the command:
# esxupdate -r file://<directory>/ESX-2031037 updateFor example, if the host is called depot:
# esxupdate –r file:///depot/var/updates/ESX-2031037 updateDuring the update process, logs appear on the terminal. You can specify the verbosity of esxupdate logs by using the -v option as shown below:
