Using JLicense to install vCenter Configuration Manager 5.5 licenses (2020955)

This article provides information on using the JLicense tool to manipulate the license codes for vCenter Configuration Manager (vCM) 5.5.

To update the vCM license key, you can use the jlicense.cmd command-line utility. You can find this utility at C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VCM\Tools or at the path where you installed vCM.

Using the jlicense.cmd utility, you can:

  • Update a single license key for servers.
  • Update a single license key for workstations.
  • Enter two keys for servers and workstations.
  • Enter a single license key for servers or workstations or enter two license keys for both servers and workstations.

For more information, see the self-service VMware Manage License Web site at

You can also license more servers or workstations than what your license key allows. Any license key count that exceeds the number of licenses provided by your license key are recorded and maintained for future auditing purposes.

Using the JLicense tool

  • To display the JLicense help information, run this command:

    jlicense -h
  • To evaluate the license key, but not to install it, run this command:

    jlicense -n -k xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

Where xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx is the license key.

  • To change a license, run this command:

    jlicense -k xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx

Where xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx is the license key.

Additional Information

Note: If you enter two keys, you must enter a server key and a workstation key. If you enter two server or two workstation license keys, only the second license key is applied.
