Installing the VDR client plugin on a Windows 7 or Windows Vista system fails with the error: VMware vSphere Client is required for installation (2020382)
Symptoms
- Cannot install the VDR client plugin on a Windows 7 or Windows Vista system where the vSphere Client is installed
- The installer claims that no vSphere Client is installed
- Installing the VDR plugin fails
- You see the error:
VMware vSphere Client is required for installation
- This issue occurs even when running autorun.exe or installing the VMwareDataRecoveryPlugin.msi file directly
Cause
This issue occurs when:
- Windows UAC starts the installer with non-administrative privileges
- The installer does not request administrator privileges during the installation
Resolution
- Disable Windows UAC before the installation and enable it after the installation completes
- Start the Windows Installer with administrator privileges
- Click Start > All Programs > Accessories.
- Right-click Command Prompt and click Run as Administrator.
- In the command prompt, change directory to c:\windows\system32\.
- Run this command:
msiexec /i d:\VMwareDataRecoveryPlugin.msi
Additional Information
C:\Windows\system32>msiexec /i c:\vdr\VMwareDataRecoveryPlugin.msi /l*v c:\vdr\install.log
Note: Modify this command to suite the path in your environment.
