How to restore the read permissions to the Microsoft Windows Users group after installation or upgrade to vCenter Orchestrator 4.2.1 (2017578)

Details

When you upgrade vCenter Orchestrator to version 4.2.1 as a part of the vCenter Server upgrade, you cannot open the Orchestrator Client because of insufficient rights.

This issue occurs because the Users group in Microsoft Windows no more has read permissions. All non-administrator users who might try to use the Orchestrator client by accessing it directly from the location, where the product is installed, are affected.

Solution

  1. Log in as a system administrator to the machine on which Orchestrator is installed.
  2. Open a command prompt and navigate to the Orchestrator installation directory.
For example: cd “c:\program files\VMware\vCenter Orchestrator”.
  3. Run the command icacls . /inheritance:e /t to restore the inheritance flag of all files in the directory.
For more information about the inheritance option, see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc753525%28v=ws.10%29.aspx.
