Issues with vCenter Operations Manager 5.0.x capacity and time remaining calculations for virtual machines and datastore objects (2017003)

Details

To calculate Time Remaining and Capacity Remaining metrics, there are five resources evaluated by vCenter Operations Manager: CPU, Memory, Disk I/O, Disk Space, and Network I/O.

However, these five resources do not apply to all object types. Therefore, vCenter Operations Manager internally evaluates a subset of the applicable resources for each object type. For example, for datastore objects only the resources Disk Space and Disk I/O are considered (if they are selected in the user interface). For virtual machine objects, only the resources CPU, Memory, and Disk Space are considered (again, if selected in the UI).  For hosts and higher-level objects, vCenter Operations Manager evaluates the resources that are selected out of all five resources.

For a given object type, if all the applicable resources are unchecked in the user interface (that is, none are selected), the metric calculation module is unable to calculate the metric dependency and therefore unable to calculate the Time Remaining or Virtual Machine Remaining values. vCenter Operations Manager checks at the user interface level to make sure at least one of the five resources are selected, but there is no check at this point that at least one of the applicable resources for each object type is checked.

When such a problem occurs, metrics are displayed with - (hyphens) or ? (question marks). The  affected areas are:

  1. The Overall Time Remaining metric for a virtual machine object. This metric appears in the Virtual Machine Inventory List View.
  2. The Overall Time Remaining metric for a datastore object,  and Capacity Remaining (in terms of virtual machines) for a datastore object. These metrics appear in the Risk and Efficiency section of the dashboard and in relevant alerts.

Solution

The workaround for this problem is to:
  • Make sure at least one CPU, memory, or disk space resource is selected.
  • Make sure at least one disk space or disk I/O resource is selected.

To check your selections, navigate to:

Configuration > Planning & Reports > Capacity & Time Remaining > Compute Resources to Analyze
