  • The VMware VirtualCenter Management Webservices fail to start after upgrading to vCenter Server 5.0 Update 1.
  • The Tomcat Catalina logs (located in C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware VirtualCenter\Logs\tomcat\logs) contain entries similar to:

    org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap initClassLoaders
    SEVERE: Class loader creation threw exception
    java.lang.NoSuchFieldError: threadAllocatedMemorySupport
    at sun.management.VMManagementImpl.initOptionalSupportFields(Native Method)
    at sun.management.VMManagementImpl.<clinit>(VMManagementImpl.java:47)
    at sun.management.ManagementFactory.<clinit>(ManagementFactory.java:468)
    at java.lang.management.ManagementFactory.getPlatformMBeanServer(ManagementFactory.java:504)
    at org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap.createClassLoader(Bootstrap.java:183)
    at org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap.initClassLoaders(Bootstrap.java:92)
    at org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap.init(Bootstrap.java:207)
    at org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap.main(Bootstrap.java:391)

Solution

This issue occurs if the Java Run-time Environment is corrupted during the upgrade process.
 
To work around this issue, perform one of these options:
  • Overwrite C:\Program Folder\vmware\infrastructure\JRE with a fresh copy of vCenter Server.
  • Perform a fresh installation of vCenter Server 5.0 Update 1.

    Notes: Before performing a fresh install:
    • Rename C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure. This allows performance charts and other services that utilize Tomcat to work.
    • Remove or rename the existing C:\Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\tomcat folder.
