Cannot install VMware Tools on Ubuntu 11.10 (2015253)

Symptoms

  • Installing VMware Tools on Ubuntu 11.10 fails
  • When trying to install VMware Tools delivered with vSphere 4.1 Update 2 or ESXi 5.0 pre-patch 2, you see this error when compiling the kernel modules:

/tmp/vmware-root/modules/vsock-only/linux/af_vsock.c:105:28: fatal error: linux/smp_lock.h: No such file or directory
    compilation terminated.

Cause

These versions of VMware Tools attempt to reference SPIN_LOCK_UNLOCKED/RW_LOCK_UNLOCKED. However, these have been removed from the Linux kernel as of version 2.6.39-rc0.

Resolution

This issue is resolved in these patches:

Install the relevant patch for your host and reinstall VMware Tools.
