Alert message for PCI devices is displayed on the console after the installation of ESX or ESXi 4.1 U2 (2014170)

Alert message is displayed on the console when you install ESX or ESXi 4.1 U2. You can see the logs for this message under VMkernel logs in the location /var/log. This issue is observed on systems which have more than two PCI root bridges.

In ESX 4.1 installed on hosts having two or more root bridges, the absence of interrupt routing information for the second root bridge triggers this alert message. This issue is a known issue with ESX. Similar warning message is displayed when the BIOS fails to provide interrupt routing information for a device.

You can distinguish the cause for the log message based on the bus number. If the log message contains the bus number 128, then it is a ESX issue, otherwise it is a system BIOS issue.

The alert message with the bus number 128 is benign in nature and VMware is aware of this issue.
