Converter Standalone 5.0 errors when an ESXi 5.0 host is selected as a destination: The access to the host resource settings is restricted. Use the management server as a destination (2012310)

Symptoms

P2V Conversion fails
You cannot select an ESXi 5.0 host as the destination for a P2V conversion
In the vCenter Converter Standalone UI, you see this error:

The access to the host resource settings is restricted to the serverIP addressthat is managing the hosts. Use the management server as a destination

Cause

This is an expected behavior. Unlike in vSphere 4.x, you cannot use an ESXi 5 host as a conversion destination if that ESXi 5 host is currently connect to and managed by a vCenter Server.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, select a vCenter Server as the destination. You can then select an ESXi5.0 host from the vCenter inventory.

Note: You can select an ESXi 5 host as a destination if it is a standalone installation not managed by any vCenter Server.
