vCenter Server Search function fails with error: A connection failure occurred (2012215)

Symptoms

The search function does not work on vCenter Server 5.0
After upgrading to vCenter Server 5.0, the search function fails with the error:

Logging to the query server failed : a connection failure occurred
Reinstalling the vSphere Client, as per vCenter Server Search function does not work (1024493), does not resolve the issue.

Cause

This issue can occur if port 10443 is blocked by a firewall. This port is required to be open between the vCenter Server and the vSphere Client for the search function to work.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, ensure that port 10443 is opened between the the vCenter Server and the vSphere Client.
