ESX 4.x and ESXi 4.x / 5.x fail to locate ks.cfg on USB drive for kickstart installation (2011332)

Symptoms

In VMware ESX 4.x and ESXi 4.x/5.x, you see this error when installing ESX/ESXi from a kickstart file located on a USB drive:

/ks.cfg was not found on any attached USB storage

Cause

This issue occurs when the ESX or ESXi host cannot read the partition of the USB drive attached.

Resolution

ESX and ESXi is not compatible with NTFS partitions.

To resolve this issue:
  1. Format the USB drive as FAT16 or FAT32.
  2. Verify that the ks.cfg file is located in the root drive and not contained in a folder.
  3. Verify that the kickstart file is named correctly as ks.cfg.

Update History

12/03/2012 - Added ESXi 5.1.x to Product Versions.
