Starting Hyperic services at the system boot time (2010808)

Purpose

This article provides information on starting the vFabric Hyperic services (Agent and/or Server) at the system boot time.

Resolution

In Linux/UNIX systems, you need an rc or init script to start the vFabric Hyperic services at system boot time. However, VMware does not provide the init scripts for Hyperic services and requires system administrators to create their own scripts to suit their specific system.

VMware does not release init scripts for Hyperic services for these reasons:
  1. The vast number of platforms on which these services run make it impractical to create scripts for each platform.
  2. Scripts are generally small and easy to create for an administrator familiar with the system.
  3. The highly varied system installations in most environments make it almost necessary for an administrator to customize any stock script.
Depending on the operating system, there are various resources available for creating init scripts. For examples, including Debian, Ubuntu, and Solaris, see the Hyperic Documentation.
