Customizing desktops with sysprep fails with the error: a specified parameter was not correct: \nspec.identity.userData.computerName (2009820)
Symptoms
- You are unable to customize desktops with sysprep for View automated pools
- When provisioning a View pool, the parent machine is cloned to 100% and then fails
- You see the error:
a specified parameter was not correct:
\nspec.identity.userData.computerName"
- In the vpxd.log file, you see entries similar to:

- Within the vSphere Client, you are able to successfully customize a full clone using the same sysprep customization script
Cause
Resolution
To resolve this issue:
- Reconfigure the parent virtual machine or template and ensure that:
- The name is less than 15 characters
- There are no underscores in the name
- Release the virtual machine's IP.
- Shut down virtual machine.
- Take new snapshot.
- Recompose the pool or provision a new virtual machine.
