System logging not configured (2007658)

Details

If you do not configure system logging with the correct log destination on the ESXi host, you receive an event error message. This error occurs if neither of the Syslog options Syslog.global.logDir or Syslog.global.logHost are set.

Impact

Logs are needed for auditing and checking diagnostic problems.  When the Syslog.global.logDir or Syslog.global.logHost syslog options are not set, the system does not have a configured log destination.

Example

If you set both Syslog configuration options (Syslog.global.logDir and Syslog.global.logHost) to empty values, you see the message:

System logging is not configured for host
host_name

Solution

In the vSphere Client, under the Syslog options (Configure > Software > Advanced Settings), set either or both of these values:
  • Syslog.global.logDir - The datastore path to the directory where output logs reside.
  • Syslog.global.logHost - The remote host where output logs reside.
