Disabling the VMware NAT Service on the Host Computer

I want to disable the VMware NAT service on my host computer. What steps do I need to take?

Solution

Follow the steps shown below for your host operating system. On a Windows host, you can choose to disable the service completely or to set it to start only when you start it manually.

Windows 2000

  1. Click Start, then choose Settings>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services.
  2. Scroll down and select VMware NAT Service.
  3. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
  4. Click the Stop button.
  5. In the Startup type list, select Disable or Manual.
  6. Click OK.


Windows XP Home

  1. Click Start, then choose Settings>Control Panel.
  2. Click Performance and Maintenance.
  3. Click Administrative Tools.
  4. Double-click Services.
  5. Scroll down and select VMware NAT Service.
  6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
  7. Click the Stop button.
  8. In the Startup type list, select Disable or Manual.
  9. Click OK.


Windows XP Professional or Windows Server 2003

  1. Click Start, then choose Settings>Control Panel.
  2. Click Administrative Tools.
  3. Click Services
  4. Double-click Services.
  5. Scroll down and select VMware NAT Service.
  6. Right-click the highlighted line and choose Properties.
  7. Click the Stop button.
  8. In the Startup type list, select Disable or Manual.
  9. Click OK.


Linux

  1. As root, rerun the configuration script.
    vmware-config.pl
  2. Deselect NAT for all virtual networks. By default, NAT is selected for vmnet8. The screen prompts and your responses should look similar to those in the following example:
    Would you like to skip networking setup and keep your old settings as they are?
    (yes/no) [yes]no
    Do you want networking for your virtual machines? (yes/no/help) [yes]yes
    Would you prefer to modify your existing networking configuration using the
    wizard or the editor? (wizard/editor/help) [editor]wizard
    The following bridged networks have been defined:
    . vmnet0 is bridged to eth0
    Do you wish to configure another bridged network? (yes/no) [no]
    Do you want to be able to use NAT networking in your virtual machines? (yes/no)
    [yes]no
    Removing a NAT network for vmnet8.
