On Linux Hosts, the libXrender Library Must Be Installed for Workstation to Work Correctly

Details

When I installed Workstation on a 64-bit Linux host, I got the error message:
The correct version of one or more libraries needed to run VMware Workstation may be missing.

I can launch the Workstation application, but when I try to power on a virtual machine, I get the error message:
Unable to change virtual machine power state: Failed to connect to peer process.

What should I do?

Solution

On Linux hosts, the libXrender library must be installed for Workstation to work correctly. If the libXrender library is not installed on the host system, you must be logged on as root to power on a virtual machine in Workstation. On systems where the libXrender package is not available, you should copy the file
/usr/lib/vmware/lib/libXrender.so.1/libXrender.so.1
to
/usr/lib/libXrender.so.1
