Losing Configuration Information from Template to Deployed Virtual Machine

Details

Why does my deployed virtual machine not keep any additional configuration information contained in the original template or the virtual machine that was used to create the template?

Solution

The only configuration information that is passed to the new virtual machine is the guest operating system name, memory size, number of network adapters, network adapter type, number of vCPUs, and number, ID, and size of virtual disks. This template information is saved in the VirtualCenter database.

The corresponding .vmtx template config file is no longer used. You can actually delete the .vmtx file without any effect on using the template (such as deploying a virtual machine).

When you create a virtual machine by deploying a template, a new virtual machine config file (.vmx) is created, based on the listed summary information.

There is no workaround for this issue.
