64-Bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 AS Guest Hangs During VMware Tools Configuration

Details

When I try to install or upgrade VMware Tools in a guest running 64-bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 AS, the virtual machine hangs during the VMware Tools configuration at the stage Starting console mouse services. What should I do?

Solution

There are two ways to work around this problem.

One way is to take the following steps:

  1. Reboot the virtual machine.
  2. At a command line prompt, enter the following commands:
    /etc/init.d/vmware-tools stop
    vmware-config-tools.pl -skipstopstart
    /etc/init.d/vmware-tools start

Another way to work around the problem is to run vmware-config-tools.pl from a text console, rather than from X:

  1. Switch to a text console. While holding down the Ctrl-Alt keys, press the spacebar, then press F1.
  2. Log on and run vmware-config-tools.pl.

VMware Tools should now be properly installed or upgraded.
