Workstation Virtual Hardware Version Changes Spontaneously After Imported System Image Is Powered On

Details

I imported a Symantec Norton Ghost 9 system image as a virtual machine. After I powered on the virtual machine, I noticed that the virtual hardware version had changed from 4 to 3. What should I do?

Solution

In some cases, after an imported virtual machine is powered on, the virtual hardware version changes from version 4 to version 3.

This problem can occur if you create a Symantec Norton Ghost 9 system image of a virtual machine from within a guest, copy the image from the guest to the host, and import the image as a new VMware virtual machine. In this case, the virtual machine configuration (.vmx) file shows:
virtualHW.version = "4"

If you then power the virtual machine on and off, the configuration files shows:
virtualHW.version = "3"

To work around this problem, edit the virtual machine's configuration file to change the line back to:
virtualHW.version = "4"
