New LUNs Not Detected on QLogic HBAs

Details

I presented new LUNs to servers that have QLogic host bus adapters (HBAs), then rescanned for the LUNs using cos-rescan.sh or the management interface. However, the LUNs are not found. What is happening here?

Solution

When you present a new fiber channel LUN to an ESX Server system with QLogic fiber channel HBAs, you must issue cos-rescan.sh twice, or perform two rescans from the management interface, in order for ESX Server to recognize the new LUNs. This is due to the asynchronous nature of LUN discovery in the QLogic driver.

For related information about running cos-rescan.sh on the lowest numbered host bus adapter first, see knowledge base article 1453 at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1453.

For related information about being unable to recognize new SAN LUNs after a command line rescan, see knowledge base article 1352 at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1352.
