Console OS (Service Console) Locks/Hangs when MegaRAID Controller is Used

Details

I am running ESX Server on a computer with a MegaRAID controller. When I start the system, it hangs as it is trying to load the MegaRAID driver. What is wrong?

Solution

We have seen this error on some, but not all, systems using MegaRAID controllers. It occurs when the console operating system (Service Console) is configured to use 256MB of RAM. To work around the problem, either add or subtract 16MB from the amount of RAM allocated to the console operating system (Service Console). To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Reboot the server, selecting linux (not vmnix).
  2. From the Web browser on your management workstation, connect to the server configuration page at http://hostname/vmware/config/ [where 'hostname' is the name of your host computer].
  3. Click Update Boot Configuration/Allocate Devices.
  4. In the field under the heading Amount of memory to allocate to the console, change the value to 240 or 272.
  5. Click Save Configuration.
  6. When the Boot Configuration Done screen appears, click Reboot Machine.
