Error Messages When Applying ESX Server 2.0.1 Patch 3 on Dell PowerEdge Servers

When I upgrade ESX Server 2.0.1 with Patch 3, the installer displays binary operator expected error messages. Do these messages indicate a problem?

Solution

The installation script for ESX Server 2.0.1 Patch 3 contains a minor error in the method used to search for duplicate drivers. On a Dell PowerEdge Server with a PercRAID controller installed, this error may cause the following error messages to appear: 
/sbin/mkinitrd:
[:/lib/modules/2.4.9-34/./kernel/drivers/scsi/aacraid/aacraid.o: binary
operator expected]
/sbin/mkinitrd:
[:/lib/modules/2.4.9-34/./kernel/drivers/scsi/aacraid/aacraid.o: binary
operator expected]
/sbin/mkinitrd:
[:/lib/modules/2.4.9-34/./kernel/drivers/scsi/aacraid/aacraid.o: binary
operator expected]
/sbin/mkinitrd:
[:/lib/modules/2.4.9-34smp/./kernel/drivers/scsi/aacraid/aacraid.o:
binary operator expected]
/sbin/mkinitrd:
[:/lib/modules/2.4.9-34smp/./kernel/drivers/scsi/aacraid/aacraid.o:
binary operator expected]
/sbin/mkinitrd:
[:/lib/modules/2.4.9-34smp/./kernel/drivers/scsi/aacraid/aacraid.o:
binary operator expected]

This is a harmless error message that does not affect your system in any way. Specifically, even though mkinitrd returns these errors during the installation, you can safely boot your server into ESX Server, Linux UP, or Linux SMP after applying this patch to your system.
