Cannot Suspend Windows NT Virtual Machine (1628)

Details

When I try to suspend a Windows NT virtual machine, I see this error:

The request to suspend this virtual machine failed because the corresponding Vmware Tools script did not run successfully. If you have configured a custom suspend script in this virtual machine, please inspect it for errors; otherwise, please submit a support request. Select Menu "Power" > "Suspend" to override the error.

How can I suspend this virtual machine?

Solution

When you suspend a virtual machine (except by choosing Power>Suspend), a VMware Tools script runs. The default script releases the IP address of the virtual machine. In order to do this, the Windows NT guest requires a specific library called icmp.dll.

By default, Windows NT does not ship with icmp.dll, so the IP address cannot be released, and the error message appears.

To work around this issue, you can install icmp.dll in your Windows NT guest operating system. You must place the library file in the system32 folder. The library is available on the Windows NT installation CD.
