Some Features Not Available to Legacy Virtual Machines in Workstation 5

Details

VMware Workstation 5 offers a number of new features. It also allows me to create and run a virtual machine in legacy mode (compatible with Workstation 4, GSX Server 3, and ESX Server 2). What are the limits of a legacy virtual machine?

Solution

The following key Workstation 5 features are not available for legacy virtual machines:

  • Clones -- You cannot clone a legacy virtual machine.
  • Snapshots -- You cannot take a snapshot of a legacy virtual machine. You cannot revert to a snapshot or go to a snapshot of a virtual machine. This also means that snapshot actions cannot be triggered when you power on or power off a virtual machine.
  • Suspend and resume -- You can suspend a legacy virtual machine when you are running it in Workstation 5. If you do so, you must also resume the virtual machine in Workstation 5.

To take advantage of the full Workstation 5 feature set, upgrade the virtual machine (VM>Upgrade Virtual Machine).
