Network Connectivity Lost After Applying ESX Server 2.5 Patch 1 (Build 12883)

After applying ESX Server 2.5 Patch 1 (Build 12883), why do I lose my network connections?

Solution

ESX Server 2.5 Upgrade Patch 1 has been withdrawn because it installed the incorrect version of a Broadcom device driver. You must install ESX Server 2.5 Upgrade Patch 2 if both of the following conditions apply to your system:

Your system contains Broadcom networking interface hardware
You have previously installed ESX Server 2.5 Upgrade Patch 1

VMware has confirmed that affected systems include:

IBM x-Series 336
IBM x-Series 346
Dell PowerEdge 2850
Fujitsu-Siemens RX300

However, systems using other Broadcom networking interface hardware could be affected by installing Patch 1. Users who did not install Patch 1 are not required to install Patch 2, regardless of the model of networking hardware they are using.
