Full Screen Mode Crashes Workstation on a Linux Host with Certain Graphics Adapters

Details

I am running VMware Workstation 5 on a Linux host. My guest operating system is running in VGA mode. When I attempt to enter full screen mode, Workstation crashes with no error message and logs me off of the host operating system. How can I avoid this?

Solution

This problem is seen on host systems using certain Intel and ATI graphics adapters.

You can work around this problem by disabling DRI in your X server.

Alternatively, you can disable DVGA mode for the virtual machine. To do so, open the virtual machine's configuration (.vmx) file and add the following line:

vga.noFullScreen = TRUE

Note: If you add this line to the configuration file, the virtual machine cannot enter VGA full screen mode.
