Recommended Microsoft NLB Mode for vMotion

Details

I want to use vMotion to migrate my virtual machine. The guest operating system is running Microsoft NLB (Network Load Balancing) service. Which NLB mode should I choose?

Solution

VMware recommends using multicast mode with Microsoft Network Load Balancing service.

Unicast NLB does not work properly when NotifySwitch is set to 1. This is a design limitation in unicast mode. See www.vmware.com/support/kb/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1556 for more information.

You should not change the VMkernel advanced setting Net.NotifySwitch from the default value of 1 for ESX Server systems involved in vMotion. This value ensures that the virtual machines' network connectivity is maintained after migration.
